ADHD FAQs

What is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder often diagnosed during childhood. The chronic condition causes a pattern of symptoms that affect daily functioning, which includes:

Impulsivity

With impulsivity, you may make quick decisions or actions without thinking things through. These may involve interrupting when others are talking or making important life decisions without thinking about the long-term consequences.

Inattention

Difficulty staying on task, inability to complete projects, and disorganization are common inattention characteristics of ADHD.

Hyperactivity

Those with ADHD may have a difficult time sitting still with a need to fidget, tap, or talk constantly.

What are ADHD symptoms?

ADHD is classified into types based on the most dominant traits. Symptoms you may experience with each type include:

Hyperactivity-impulsivity

In adults, hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms may manifest as constantly interrupting others, addictive behaviors, restlessness, or complaints of boredom.

Inattention

With inattention, you may find yourself easily distracted, chronically late, or you may struggle to finish programs on time.

Adults with undiagnosed or untreated ADHD often feel overwhelmed by life, which may lead to depression and anxiety. Dr. Sajan and her team specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD and provides the care you need to help you feel more in control.

How is ADHD diagnosed?

The diagnosis of ADHD may be complicated. No single clinical tool provides all the answers. At Health & Psychiatry, the team first conducts an initial psychiatric evaluation for all new patients, which is a comprehensive evaluation that identifies the biological, psychological, and social factors that affect your mental wellness.

Based on the information gathered during your initial psychiatric evaluation, she may recommend you undergo the QbTest to assist with diagnosing ADHD. When combined with the data collected during your assessment, the computer-based test provides objective data that helps Dr. Sajan and the team assess your ADHD.

The QbTest consists of an infrared camera, a headband with an infrared marker attached to it, and a responder button. During the test, you’re shown several symbols on a computer screen. Your job is to push the responder button when certain symbols appear on your screen.

The test takes about 15 minutes and isn’t dependent on your language, reading, or mathematical skills.

How is ADHD treated?

The treatment for ADHD focuses on reducing your symptoms and improving your overall quality of life. Dr. Sajan and her team develop individualized treatment plans that best suit your needs, which may include medication and psychotherapy.

The team schedules regular follow-up appointments to monitor your symptoms and adjusts your treatment plan as needed.
