Different Types of
Dementia

Understanding the differences helps guide accurate diagnosis and appropriate dementia care.

The most common form of dementia, resulting from complex brain changes that cause gradual loss of brain cells and their connections. It is not a normal part of aging.

Occurs when reduced blood flow damages brain tissue, often due to blocked or damaged blood vessels from strokes, blood clots, high blood pressure, or age-related changes. Most common in those with cardiovascular risk factors such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, or diabetes.

Caused by abnormal protein deposits (Lewy bodies) that disrupt normal brain function. Individuals often experience movement and balance problems alongside memory difficulties, attention issues, hallucinations, and sleep disturbances.

Results from progressive nerve cell loss primarily in the frontal and temporal lobes. Symptoms center on personality and behavioral changes, including social inappropriateness, impulsiveness, apathy, and loss of empathy, as well as language difficulties such as trouble finding words or speaking fluently.

A decline in thinking and reasoning that can develop in individuals with Parkinson's disease. While early Parkinson's symptoms affect movement (tremors, stiffness, slowed movement), progressive brain changes can impact cognitive function, causing difficulties with memory, judgment, attention, and problem-solving.

Dementia can also develop from brain damage, including repeated head injuries or traumatic brain injury (TBI), which increases dementia risk over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rare form that typically progresses much faster than other types. Unlike most dementias, which develop over years, CJD can worsen within just a few months. Individuals may experience rapid declines in memory, coordination, and the ability to speak or move.

Life expectancy varies significantly based on the type of dementia, age at diagnosis, overall health, and individual factors. Generally, vascular dementia and Lewy body dementia have shorter life expectancies compared to other forms of dementia. On average, individuals with these types of dementia may live approximately 5 to 7 years after diagnosis.

Currently, there is no cure for most forms of dementia. However, treatment can effectively manage symptoms, slow progression in some cases, and significantly improve quality of life. Early diagnosis and comprehensive care planning allow individuals to maintain independence longer and help families prepare for future needs.

While not all dementia can be prevented, certain lifestyle factors may reduce risk:

  • Maintaining cardiovascular health through regular exercise and healthy diet
  • Managing conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol
  • Staying mentally and socially active
  • Avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption
  • Protecting against head injuries

These measures support overall brain health, though they cannot guarantee prevention.
